About the role

Help shape places that support communities and generate value.

We're looking for skilled and motivated Building Surveyors to join our Repairs & Maintenance Team, helping to maintain safe, compliant and high-quality buildings across Dorset Council's diverse property portfolio.

We are recruiting to roles across two distinct asset portfolios:

  • Operational Assets – offices, depots, libraries, family hubs and other buildings that support frontline council services.
  • Commercial & Community Assets – leased properties, leisure facilities, community buildings and income-generating assets that support local communities and generate value for the council.

About the role

As a Dorset Council Building Surveyor, you will take ownership of a diverse portfolio of assets, ensuring buildings remain safe, compliant, sustainable and fit for purpose.

Working within our Repairs & Maintenance Team, part of the Facilities Management service, you will provide professional surveying expertise across repairs, maintenance, compliance and minor works, supporting the long-term performance of assets in line with Dorset Council's Strategic Asset Management Plan 2024-2030.

This is a varied and rewarding role covering:

  • Reactive and planned maintenance
  • Statutory compliance and landlord responsibilities
  • Contractor and consultant management
  • Budget management and value for money
  • Tenant, occupier and stakeholder engagement
  • Asset performance and data management

What you'll deliver

You'll play a key role in ensuring Dorset Council's buildings remain safe, operational and well maintained by:

  • Managing a portfolio of assets, overseeing condition, compliance and maintenance activity
  • Procuring, commissioning and managing contractors to deliver repairs and maintenance works
  • Undertaking inspections, condition assessments and defect diagnosis
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and lease obligations
  • Supporting budget management, maintenance planning and value for money
  • Building effective relationships with building users, tenants and stakeholders
  • Contributing to service improvement and long-term asset performance
  • Participating in the out-of-hours emergency response rota as required

You will help ensure assets are maintained in a way that supports service delivery, community outcomes and financial sustainability.

About you

You'll bring a strong building surveying background, together with excellent organisational and relationship management skills.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Experience in building surveying, repairs and maintenance, facilities management or property management
  • Good technical knowledge of building construction, maintenance, compliance and health and safety requirements
  • Experience managing contractors and delivering works within occupied buildings
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management and customer service skills
  • Commercial awareness and a focus on achieving value for money
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively as part of a team

Why join us?

You'll be joining a forward-looking Assets & Property service that is transforming how Dorset Council manages its estate.

Your work will:

  • Help maintain safe, compliant and sustainable buildings
  • Support frontline services, local communities and tenants
  • Protect and enhance the value of council assets
  • Contribute to a more efficient and strategically managed estate
This is an opportunity to make a tangible difference to both places and people across Dorset.
