About the role

 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Arboricultural Officer to join Dorset Council’s Arboriculture & Grounds team.

In this key operational role, you will support the day-to-day management of the Council’s tree stock, helping to protect and enhance Dorset’s environment while ensuring public safety and maintaining high standards across our tree management programme.

Working across a diverse portfolio of sites, you will carry out inspections, manage works, and provide professional arboricultural advice, contributing to the delivery of safe, sustainable, and well-managed tree-lined environments for residents and visitors.


What you will be doing

You will play a central role in managing tree-related operations, including:

  • Undertaking tree inspections and recording findings on the Council’s asset management systems
  • Contributing to and maintaining an accurate database of Council-owned trees
  • Managing enquiries and responding to urgent and emergency callouts
  • Line managing Tree Inspectors, including conducting 1:1s and supporting performance
  • Specifying and overseeing works, liaising closely with contractors and internal teams
  • Carrying out quality assurance checks against relevant British Standards
  • Providing specialist advice to colleagues, stakeholders, and external organisations
  • Supporting contractor compliance and ensuring works meet agreed specifications
  • Assisting with Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor preparation
  • Deputising for the Arboriculture & Grounds Team Manager as required 

Working environment

This is a predominantly field-based role involving:

  • Regular outdoor working in all weather conditions
  • Exposure to traffic and operational environments
  • Lone working and dealing with members of the public
  • Occasional conflict resolution and emergency response

A works vehicle, specialist equipment, and ICT tools will be provided.
